Watch maintenance: when to do it?

The mechanical watch it is a complex and delicate system. Although the skill of the manufacturers has brought great improvements to thereliability and the robustness of watch movements over the last hundred years, these are still gears and springs that need correct maintenance lubrication to work.

But how often is it necessary to submit a mechanical watch a revision? And who is best qualified to provide it? Let's find out in this article.

What is a review

La review of a mechanical watch it is the opening of the watch, the removal of the movement, its disassembly, its cleaning, the lubrication of its components and the replacement or repair of any damaged ones. This activity is then followed by the reassembly of the movement, the checking of the time, the reassembly of the movement-case assembly and, finally, the verification of the overall functionality of the watch. In this last phase, checking the waterproofness and replacing the gaskets is essential.

In short, the review it is a complete check and a restoration new toentire watch.

When the review should be done

A distinction can be made between ordinary and extraordinary maintenance.

Un mechanical watch should be subjected to review as a form of ordinary maintenance at least every three: and at most every five years. There are exceptions, given for example some new movements which, according to the manufacturers, would be able to function for five years without any need for maintenance, or certain movements vintage that require special care. Overall, however, the three-year interval between one service and another is the recommended one for a modern mechanical watch.

Extraordinary maintenance is that which follows a traumatic event, such as water entering the watch, or an impact that damages it. Even in this case, the overhaul is done comprehensively: a watchmaker doesn't just fix what's wrong, but carries out a complete check of the watch, so that the owner can wear it without problems.
