What does technical terms mean?

Watchmaking glossary

A

Stainless steel

The term stainless steel indicates alloyed or unalloyed steels that possess a particular degree of purity. In the field of watchmaking, this type of steel is very important as it protects watches from corrosion.

316L stainless steel is widely used in watch making. The Rolex manufacture chooses the 904L type. These alloys contain chromium and nickel, are stainless and particularly resistant to corrosion and humidity.

More

The anchor is a two-armed connecting lever, the shape of which resembles a sea anchor. A component of the escapement, the anchor joins the escape wheel (also known as the anchor wheel) with the balance wheel axis. The anchor receives energy from the escape wheel and transmits it to the balance wheel. At the same time, it stops the motion of the escape wheel and gears at regular intervals.

Anglage

Anglage is a process of finishing movements. It is obtained by polishing and smoothing the corners of the components at 45 °, the width of which remains unchanged.

Seconds stop

The stop of the seconds is a mechanism that allows you to set the time precisely. Pulling out the crown stops the second hand. To restart, the crown must be returned to its initial position.

Automatic

Automatic indicates the automatic winding of a movement. The winding spring uses the natural movement of the wrist and arm to wind up. This is made possible by an oscillating mass (also called the charging rotor or rotor) present in the movement, which moves in one or both directions. The outer end of the spring is equipped with a device that limits its charge, to avoid energy overload. The central rotor is currently a very popular mechanism.

blooming

Blueing is the process by which the steel elements are slowly exposed to a temperature of about 300 ° C. The formation of a thin oxide film causes the metal to turn blue. Watchmakers use this procedure to make hands, screws and movement components particularly refined. Blueing is a procedure widely used by the watchmakers of Glashütte, a German city located in Saxony.

B
Bakelite

Developed in the 1905 by Belgian chemist Leo Hendrik Baekeland, Bakelite is a completely synthetic plastic material. Objects of common use, such as steering wheels, radios, telephones and handles of pots and pans were produced using this refractory material.

Bar

The bar is a unit of measurement that indicates the pressure exerted on a surface. Additional units of pressure measurement are the atmosphere (atm) and the pascal (Pa).

1 bar = 100 kPa = 0,1 MPa

1 bar is equivalent to the atmospheric pressure on the earth's surface or to the pressure exerted by water at a depth of 10 m.

Inside the barrel there is a winding spring wound on itself, which unrolls and supplies energy to the watch.

Bicompax

The term bicompax indicates the number of counters (totalizers) of a chronograph. A bicompax has two counters positioned respectively at 3 and 9 hours. A tricompax is equipped with 3 sub-dials arranged in a v-shape.

Barbell

Mechanical watches are animated by the constant oscillation of the balance wheel. This consists of a wheel and very often the spiral is also considered an integral part of it. The balance wheel has the same function as the pendulum in grandfather clocks, but it oscillates much faster. Currently 21.600 or 28.800 vibrations per hour are considered standard, while a pendulum achieves only 3.600 vibrations per hour. The accuracy of the watch depends on the number and regularity of the oscillations. The escapement receives energy from the mainspring and transmits it in a controlled manner to the balance wheel, which rotates in a to and fro movement.

C

Annual calendar

The annual calendar is a complication, thanks to which it is necessary to manually change the date only once a year, i.e. at the end of February. The annual calendar is also known as the full calendar.

Perpetual calendar

The perpetual calendar is a watchmaking complication that guarantees the correct indication of the date up to the year 2100 of the Gregorian calendar, without requiring any manual modification. A perpetual calendar takes into account long and short months, as well as leap years in which February has 29 days.

CALIBRO

In the watch industry, the term caliber is synonymous with movement. Very often it is accompanied by a number to indicate the name of the movement, such as the “ETA 2824-2 caliber”.

Charge

Charging is the process by which the charging spring can be tensioned. In the past pocket watches needed a key to charge (charge key), which was subsequently replaced by a crown (winding crown). In self-winding watches, the charge is guaranteed by the oscillating mass of the movement, that is the rotor.

Manual winding

The charge of the movement of a clock can be done manually. By turning the crown (winding crown), the spring is tensioned and transmits energy to the movement.

Cerachrom

Cerachrom is the ceramic produced by Rolex. It is a particularly hard and scratch-resistant high-tech material.

Deployant closure

The deployant clasp is an opening and closing mechanism of the watch strap. While the pin buckle allows a complete opening of the strap, the deployant clasp is attached to the two ends of the bracelet.

Double folding clasp

The double deployant clasp is a deployant clasp, which can be opened from both sides so that the opening of the bracelet is larger.

Complication

A complication is an additional function. The most common are the moon phases, the alarm clock, the stopwatch function and the perpetual calendar. They are a real demonstration of watchmaking skill, especially when a watch contains more than one.

Original condition

The original condition of a watch indicates that the watch has not undergone any changes and is still in its original condition.

Crown to the left

A watch with a crown on the left has the wheel for setting the time and / or winding the movement on the left side. In most watches, the crown is positioned on the right.

Screw-down crown

A crown screwed to the watch case is called a screw crown. This mechanism guarantees greater water resistance than classic crowns, which are simply inserted into the case. The first watch with a screw-down crown is the Rolex Oyster, which was launched in 1926.

Quick date correction

Thanks to the rapid correction of the date it is possible to set the date using the crown. The movements with a traditional date window allow you to change the date only by performing two full turns of the hour hand.

Côtes de Genève

Côtes de Genève is a parallel rectilinear stripe finish used to decorate both the movements and other components of the watch.

Chronograph

Chronographs have a chronometer function, used for time measurement in sports.

Flyback chronograph

A flyback chronograph offers a special chronograph function. By pressing a button, the second hand is reset and restarts automatically, thus starting a new timing. A standard chronograph, on the other hand, requires the use of two buttons: one positioned at the top to reset the hand and one at the bottom to start another timing. Flyback chronographs were designed to meet the needs of military aviation. They are used when carrying out several consecutive maneuvers, which must be carried out with extreme precision. A normal chronograph function is not suitable for these cases, as starting a new timing by pressing three buttons is a procedure that takes too long.

Rattrapante chronograph

The rattrapante chronograph is a complication that allows the measurement of intermediate times. For this purpose, it has two second hands and three push buttons. Press the button to start the chronograph and operate both hands. By pressing the button a second time, one of the two second hands stops and indicates a first time interval. Meanwhile, the other hand continues to turn. Pressing the button again restarts the stopped hand.

Split chronograph

See rattrapante chronograph

stopwatch

Chronometers are watches or calibers characterized by particularly high precision, which is attested by an official certificate. Chronometric tests are mainly carried out by the Swiss Official Chronometer Control (COSC). For several years, the chronometry certificate has also been issued by the Chronometry Department of the Thuringian Weight and Measurement Office based in Glashütte.

D

Shockproof device

The shockproof device protects the components of the watch from damage due to falls or violent collisions with hard objects. The pins of the rocker arm axis are particularly delicate, which is why a small metal spring prevents them from being damaged by cushioning shocks. A watch is considered shock-proof if it is not damaged by falling from a height of 1m onto a horizontal wooden surface. The most common shockproof device is called Incabloc. However, some brands use their own production systems.

Double barrel

Double barrel indicates two barrels mounted in series, which guarantee a greater power reserve.

Dubois Dépraz

Dubois Dépraz is a company specializing in the production of watchmaking complications.

E

ETA SA Manufacture Horlogère Suisse

ETA SA Manufacture Horlogère Suisse, abbreviated ETA, is a Swiss movement manufacturer belonging to the Swatch Group.

Esalite

Esalite is the term used by Omega to refer to plexiglas. It is an unbreakable material, which requires low production and replacement costs.

F

Moon phases

The indication of the moon phases is a complication, which indicates the current moment of the moon. A lunar month lasts 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2,9 seconds. From the new moon to the full moon, a disc indicates the moon phases on the dial.

Pin buckle

The pin buckle is a type of closure on watch straps. The longest part of the strap is perforated, while the shorter one has a barb, that is a temple, and a metal part in the shape of a "U". The barb is inserted into one of the holes in the strap to close it and choose the desired length. The metal part prevents the barb from coming out of the hole.

finishing

The term finishing comes from the French "finissage" and indicates the finishing of the movements. The most common processes are the Côtes de Genève, perlage (pearly) and the sunbeam finish. Bluing and anglage are other widely used finishes.

Transparent caseback

The transparent back of luxury watches is made of sapphire or mineral glass. It is located on the back of the case and allows you to observe the movement.

G

GMT

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, which is the local time in Greenwich (London). Long used as the Earth's reference time zone, in 1972 it was replaced by Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which has no astronomical basis.

A watch with a GMT function indicates both local time and a second time zone.

I

impermeability

The water resistance of a watch is indicated by the unit of measurement bar. In addition to pressure resistance, watch manufacturers also indicate the maximum depth that a watch can reach without being damaged. It is necessary to pay attention to these values: watches that indicate a depth of up to 30 m are not underwater but only resist splashing. In fact, diving watches must withstand up to 20 bar, or 200 m of depth. The water resistance of a watch does not only depend on the water pressure, but also on other factors such as temperature variations. Over time the seals deteriorate, so it is important to regularly check the water resistance of the watch. The water that has infiltrated the case condenses under the glass and can cause irreparable damage to the watch.

Power reserve indicator

The power reserve indication allows you to view the autonomy of a mechanical watch. Indicates if and when it is necessary to wind the watch, for example via the crown.

Indication of the day of the week

The indication of the day of the week allows you to view the current day on the dial.

Indication of the month

The indication of the month allows you to view the current month on the dial.

Year indication

The indication of the day of the week also allows you to view the current year on the dial.

Indication of the date

The date is indicated by hands or by numbers printed on a ring positioned under the dial. The date is visible thanks to a window on the dial. Both the hands and the number ring make one full revolution per month. In months with less than 31 days, the date must be corrected manually.

L

Luminescence

The surface of the luminescent hands is coated with a luminous substance, which glows in the dark. In the past, tritium, a radioactive material, was used. The luminescence is due to the interaction of the electrons emitted by the tritium with the crystals of the zinc alloy in which the hands are made. Currently, the luminescent Superluminova mass is widely used, a non-radioactive material consisting of organic and phosphorescent nocturnal luminescent pigments. The luminescence is activated thanks to the effect exerted by the light on the luminous mass. This interaction determines the duration of the luminescence. However, the charge of the Superluminova is limited.

Lunetta

The bezel is the ring around the watch glass and can be rotatable or fixed. The bezel of the diving watches is unidirectional and graduated rotatable, to allow the measurement of diving times. Chronographs often have a fixed bezel with a tachymeter scale to calculate the average speed over a distance. The bezels are made of metal or ceramic.

Rotating bezel

The bezel is a ring positioned around the dial. The revolving variant is often used for diving and aviation watches.

The bezel of diving watches can only rotate counterclockwise, to avoid inadvertently prolonging diving times. Before diving, the diver must set the zero indication at the minute hand. The 60 minute scale on the bezel allows you to view the dive time.

The bezel of aviation watches is bidirectional revolving.

M

Charging spring

Driving spring

The drive spring, also known as the charge spring, stores and supplies energy to a mechanical watch. It is positioned in the barrel and is tensioned by a rotor or by manual winding. The balance wheel is equipped with an escapement that ensures that the drive spring supplies energy in a regular and graduated manner.

N

Luminescent numbers

The luminescent numbers are covered with a luminous substance that glows in the dark. In the past, tritium, a radioactive material, was used. Currently, the luminescent Superluminova mass is widely used, a non-radioactive material consisting of organic and phosphorescent nocturnal luminescent pigments. The luminescence is activated thanks to the effect exerted by a source of light, natural or artificial, on the luminous mass.

Reference number

In the watchmaking sector, the reference, also called the reference number, indicates the model number. It is very useful for identifying a specific clock and thus facilitates research.

O

Gold Everose

Everose gold is Rolex's 18-karat rose gold alloy. Compared to traditional rose gold, the percentage of platinum used in Everose gold guarantees a higher luster of the precious metal. The red color of the gold alloy is given by the copper.

Oro Sedna

Sedna gold is an 18-karat alloy with a reddish color patented by Omega and composed of gold, copper and palladium.

Quartz clock

Quartz watches are animated by a quartz crystal. Solar energy or batteries supply energy to the crystal, which oscillates at a frequency of 32.768 Hz. The fast and constant oscillation is transformed into an electronic signal and the frequency is split several times until it reaches one pulse per second. The hands are set in motion by a stepper motor. In the 70s, watches from the Far East conquered the international market with their competitive prices. Their success affected the watch industry causing the so-called quartz crisis.

Antimagnetic watch

An antimagnetic watch is characterized by being insensitive to the influence of magnetic fields. Its accuracy must comply with the parameters established by the DIN 8309 directive and the ISO 764 standard.

According to DIN 8309, clocks with a movement greater than 20 mm in diameter are antimagnetic if they do not stop when exposed to a magnetic field of 4.800 A / m (6 mT) and if they guarantee an average accuracy of +/- 30 seconds per day.

Skeleton watch

A skeleton watch is characterized by presenting different spaces or cavities within the movement, visible through the dial or the back of the watch. Skeletonized watches are fine watchmaking works of art that are very complicated to make.

Diver watch

To be defined as such, a diving watch must comply with the current ISO 6425 and DIN 8306 standards. With a minimum water resistance of 10 bar, or 100 m depth, this type of watch is ideal for wearing while diving. Typical characteristics of a good diving watch are water resistance up to 20 bar (200 m), luminescent hands and indexes and a graduated bezel. This ring can only rotate counterclockwise, to avoid inadvertently prolonging diving times. Some dive watches are water resistant to a depth of 1000m and most of them are equipped with a helium escape valve.

P

Original pieces

We talk about original parts when you repair your watch using only components from the relevant manufacturer.

Small seconds

The small seconds allow the seconds to be displayed in a small off-center counter. This solution is often used for pocket watches, hand-wound watches and chronographs. If they do not have the small seconds, the watches can present a seconds hand in the center, which is fixed on the same central pin of the minutes and hours hands.

Screw button

Like the screw-down crown, the screw-down button is also screwed to the watch case. This mechanism makes the case more airtight. Chronographs with a higher degree of waterproofing are often equipped with screw buttons.

Q

Guilloche dial

Guilloche dials have a mechanically or manually engraved decoration. This ornamental work is obtained thanks to wavy or linear lines that are repeated and overlap.

Guilloche dial by hand

The handmade guilloché dials are characterized by slightly irregular lines and design.

R

Fine adjustment

Fine adjustment is a procedure that serves to ensure the high accuracy of the watch. For this purpose, the watch is adjusted in different positions and at different temperatures. The stopwatches are controlled in five positions and three temperatures to meet the requirements of the Swiss Official Chronometer Control (COSC).

rehaut

The flange is the edge of the dial, which supports the watch glass and often has scales or engravings.

repetition

Repetition is a watchmaking complication that indicates the time via an acoustic signal. For this purpose, mechanical calipers have a hammer, which is operated by an additional lever or by a button on the side of the case. There are five types of repetition: hours, quarter hours, eighths of an hour, five minutes and minutes. Repetition is one of the most expensive and sophisticated complications.

Repeat minutes

The minute repeater offers sound reproduction of the time. It is one of the rarest and most refined complications of a wristwatch. The beep is produced by a tiny ringer mechanism.

Power reserve

The power reserve indicates the hours of autonomy of the watch, without it being wound manually or by the natural movement of the arm.

Rolesor

The Geneva-based brand Rolex uses the term Rolesor for watches that combine steel and gold, while the term normally used by other manufacturers is two-tone.

Rotor

The rotor is a semicircular, movable metal element that is part of the winding mechanism of an automatic watch. As soon as the watch is moved, the oscillating mass of the rotor puts tension on the mainspring (mainspring) and thus supplies the watch with energy.

Escape wheel

The escape wheel (also known as an anchor wheel) is a component of the anchor movements. Positioned between the gears and the balance wheel, the escape wheel connects the balance wheel with the anchor. Asymmetrical teeth are a feature of the escape wheel.

S

Tachymetric scale

The tachymeter scale allows you to measure the average hourly speed over a given distance (km / h or mph) and is positioned on the bezel or on the edge of the dial. For example, if you travel a kilometer and time a travel time of 28 seconds for this distance, the tachymeter scale will indicate a speed of 130 km / h. The Omega Speedmaster Professional and the Rolex Daytona are renowned watches that feature a tachymeter scale.

Telemetric scale

Positioned on the edge of the chronograph dials, the telemetry scale allows you to measure the distance of an event that is immediately visible and then audible. For example, using the chronograph function you can time the elapsed time between a lightning bolt and thunder. The stopped second hand indicates the distance to which the storm is on the scale. In artillery, the tachymeter scale can be used to visualize the distance a gun is at. This is derived from the difference between the moment in which you see the fire of a cannon and the moment in which you hear the sound of the explosion.

Exhaust

The escapement transmits energy in a constant and controlled way to the balance wheel, which with its oscillations regulates the rotation speed of the gears.

Currently, most wristwatches use the Swiss anchor escapement, consisting of an anchor and escape wheel. The latter is directly connected to the second wheel, on whose pivot the seconds hand is fixed. The oscillation of the anchor is synchronized with the "to and fro" movement of the balance wheel, for this reason the anchor can block and start the rotating movement of the escape wheel. If the balance wheel oscillates at a frequency of 28.800 A / h (4 Hz), every second is divided into eight alternations.

Co-axial escapement

In the 70s, British watchmaker George Daniels invented the co-axial escapement, an alternative to the Swiss anchor escapement. The name derives from the use of two superimposed coaxial wheels. The advantage of this escapement is the considerable reduction of the friction of the parts that compose it, which require less lubrication and maintenance. In the late 90s, Omega perfected the co-axial escapement to mass-produce it and use it in their own watches. Currently most Omega models have a caliber with this type of escapement.

Seconds in the center

The central second hand is located on the same central pin on which the hour and minute hands are also fixed. Some watches have small seconds, which present the second hand off-center in a small counter. This solution is often used in chronographs, whose central seconds hand is intended for the chronometer function.

Limited series

A limited series offers only a certain number of watches.

Geneva Seal

The Geneva Seal, also called the Geneva Seal, is a guarantee of the origin and quality of a caliber. Traditionally the seal is punched, therefore marked, with a punch in the metal of the movement. A new technique, the so-called nano-structural marking, allows to alter the surface of the metal at a microscopic level. Therefore, even small components of the movement can carry the Geneva Seal. This seal can only be claimed by mechanical calibers produced, assembled and regulated in the Canton of Geneva. In addition, 12 other criteria relating to finish, quality and design must be met. The Geneva Seal is awarded by eight members accredited by the Commission of the Geneva State Control Office. Cartier, Vacheron Constantin, Roger Dubuis and Chopard are among the most renowned manufacturers of Geneva seal movements.

Spiral

The hairspring is a component of the balance wheel and is therefore part of the regulating organ of a mechanical watch. The contraction and expansion phases of the spiral must be as symmetrical as possible and are repeated several times per second, to determine the accuracy of the clock. The spiral is a very thin metal blade, weighing only two thousandths of a gram. It is made using special materials such as Nivarox alloy or silicon, an antimagnetic semimetal.

Breguet spiral

Invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in the 1795, the Breguet spiral is a balance bar with a double terminal curve. Its symmetrical development ensures better movement precision.

Barbell spiral

See spiral

Ringtone

The strike is a mechanism found in a mechanical watch. The time is indicated by an acoustic signal produced by a hammer which strikes a stamp fixed on the movement plate.

Superluminova

Superluminova is the brand of a green luminescent substance used to cover hands and indexes. This material recharges when exposed to light and releases energy in the dark in the form of luminescence, the intensity of which decreases with the passing of the hours. Superluminova is the most popular luminescent material in the watch industry, although some manufacturers use other substances. Unlike tritium and radium, which was widely used until the 50s, Superluminova is not radioactive. Furthermore, the chemical composition of Superluminova is stable and guarantees its luminescence even after several years.

T

Whirlwind

The tourbillon is a circular, rotating cage that completes one full revolution per minute. Inside are the most important elements of a mechanical watch: the regulating organ and the escapement. If the watch is placed upright, the effects of gravity affect these components and cause small inaccuracies. By rotating on itself, the tourbillon compensates for errors caused by the force of gravity. In 1795 Abraham Louis Breguet invented the tourbillon for pocket watches, which today is predominantly present in luxury watches. The production of a tourbillon requires great watchmaking mastery.

Anti-reflective treatment

The anti-reflective treatment increases the transparency and clarity of the watch glass. The reduction of light reflections ensures better readability of the time.

Watch manufacturers perform the antireflection treatment by applying a thin and transparent film to the glass, which is evaporated in a vacuum.

Tricompax

The term Tricompax indicates the V-shaped arrangement of three counters on the dial positioned at 3, 6 and 9 hours.

Helium valve

The helium valve protects diving watches from damage due to overpressure. In the decompression chambers, professional divers breathe a special gas mixture that also contains helium. The helium atoms penetrate the watch through the seals and are thus subjected to strong pressure. This can cause the glass to explode when the diver exits the decompression chamber. To prevent this from happening, the valve ensures the escape of helium from the watch. Activation is automatic or manual.

Hardlex glass

Hardlex glass is a mineral glass mainly used by Seiko. This material is subjected to a particular procedure, which makes it much harder and scratch-resistant than a traditional mineral glass. In terms of resistance, it is found between mineral glass and sapphire crystal.

Acrylic glass

Acrylic glass is a synthetic and transparent material that can be molded at certain temperatures. Also known as Plexiglas, this glass is particularly resistant to impact, under various met conditionseorologiwhich and corrosion. In addition, surface scratches can be easily removed and polished.

Mineral glass

Mineral glass is a low-cost material comparable to that used for windows. Harder than acrylic glass, however, it is less resistant to impact and scratches than sapphire crystal. Mineral glass can be subjected to a treatment that hardens it and improves its performance.

Sapphire crystal

Sapphire crystal is a synthetic crystal. Much more resistant to shocks and scratches than mineral or acrylic glass, sapphire crystal is widely used in the production of luxury watches.
