The XNUMXs saw a great expansion of commercial air traffic. The transatlantic route, which connects the New World to the Old, is crowded with airliners, first with turboprop engines, then jet planes. The need for pilots to be able to read two different time zones simultaneously brings Rolex to develop a new watch, the Rolex GMT Masters. This Rolex, developed in collaboration with the Pan American pilots, is a reliable and easy to consult tool: thanks to their watches Rolex GMT Masters, pilots could see both local time and Greenwich Mean Time in a single glance.

The name GMT is the abbreviation for Greenwich Mean Time, or Greenwich Mean Time, the fundamental meridian from which all time zones are counted. Aircraft flight plans are mandatorily drawn up using Greenwich Mean Time, which is why the Rolex GMT Masters it immediately became a tool sought after by airline pilots.

Il Rolex GMT Masters is also adopted by the Concorde test pilots: this enterprise contributes to consolidating, in the collective imagination, the vision of this Rolex as a "pilots watch".

THE ROLEX GMT WATCH: HOW IT'S MADE

Il Rolex GMT it has, in addition to the usual minute and second hour hands, a fourth sphere, which makes a turn of the dial every 24 hours. The reading of this hand is carried out by comparing it with the rotating bezel, graduated over 24 hours. The rotating bezel is another distinctive element of the Rolex GMT Masters. The bezel is divided into two colors, representing the day-night division.

In 1983 the Rolex GMT Master II, which allows you to adjust the hour hand independently of the red 24-hour hand. This allows you to read three independent time zones simultaneously on the dial.

In 2005, Il Rolex GMT Master II acquires the new Cerachrom bezel, which guarantees high scratch resistance and lasting color brilliance.
