Polished, satin or sandblasted?

Dr. N.

The summer is a season in which the Watches they are more stressed and exposed to shock e scratches. We have seen, in a previous article, the pros and cons of the various types of glass. But a watch can also be scratched on the bracelet and case, so now it's time to find out what the finishes are - glossy, satin e sandblasted - which behave better with scratches.

Glossy finish

La glossy finish is that more traditional, which is usually found on elegant watches. It guarantees great aesthetic pleasure, but it is also the most sensitive to scratches: A smear on a mirror surface is naturally very visible. Fortunately, it is also the easiest surface finish to polish for a watchmaker.

Satin finish

Another great classic. There satin finish, and Brush, it appears as a set of thin and close stripes that cover a certain surface. If the scratch is roughly in the same direction as the satin finish, it almost disappears from view: if transversal, however, you will notice more. A watchmaker knows like polish unsatin watch, but care must be taken if the surfaces have lines oriented differently from each other, or even alternations of glossy and satin: here the difficulties, and consequently i costs, increase.

Sandblasted finish

La sandblasting it is an industrial process that makes the metal surface rough. This solution allows you to mask to the best small dents e scratches. Not surprisingly, it is used in military watches. The disadvantage of sandblasting is that, if it is really damaged and you want to restore the watch, the procedure of polish è more complex and requires specific equipment compared to traditional glossy and satin surfaces.
