The new model Rolex Submariner 2020, in fact, in receiving the appreciation of fans and critics, has brought with it a new wave of interest for the previous models.
In this article we will compare two successes of the recent past of the line Rolex Submariner. We have chosen to focus on undated models, considered by purists to be the most essential and faithful to the origins of the Rolex Submariner.
The protagonists of our test: 14060 and 114060
The two watches we compare today are the Rolex Submariner 14060 and Rolex Submariner 114060.
Il Rolex Submariner 14060 it has all the elements appreciated in its predecessors: a highly clean dial thanks to the absence of a date window and a Cyclops lens, a case of less intrusive dimensions than the current one, perforated lugs and a light bracelet in stamped steel. However, it brings important innovations, which make it appreciated by those who want to combine aesthetics Retro to the reliability and serenity of use of a Rolex modern. We are talking about the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal, the winding crown with Triplock technology that guarantees better water resistance, the modern "3000 series" movement: in short, this Rolex is so much the last of the Submariner classics, as well as the first of the modern ones.
Il Rolex Submariner 114060 is instead a Rolex definitely more contemporary. The 3130 movement, revisited in many of its parts compared to its predecessor, has the official chronometer certification, as the “four lettering” dial reminds us. The bracelet has solid links and the new clasp has a much more solid appearance. The bracelet of the predecessor, while functional, did not convey the feeling of robustness of the new model. The most obvious difference is in the shape of the case. The Rolex Submariner 114060 it has more massive crown protection shoulders, a prominent rotating bezel, and “dress taller” once on the wrist.
The feature that, however, more than others distinguishes the Rolex Submariner 114060 from the previous Rolex Submariner 14060 is the shape of the case: the new lugs, large, massive, square, make the watch more visually impressive and eye-catching. The bezel also contributes to the greater aesthetic presence Cerachrom, which reflects the light more, and the indexes more visible, thanks to the thickened outline. The four lines on the dial, bearing the wording relating to chronometer certification as mentioned, also attract the eye. In short, the Rolex Submariner 114060 looks like a distinctly more watch massif compared to the previous version.
In the image above it is possible to appreciate various differences between the Rolex Submariner 114060, on the left, and the Rolex Submariner 14060, on the right. As mentioned, the shape of the lugs is more massive in the new model and more streamlined in the previous one. The peculiarity that we would like to emphasize in this case is the shape of the rotating bezel. We can first notice that the new bezel goes flush with the glass, while that of the previous model is lower and more elusive. Furthermore, the knurling of the new model is more aggressive and raised than the previous one. They look like details, but between the more massive case, the more visible bezel, the more aggressive knurling, the effect of Rolex Submariner 114060 on the wrist it is definitely more present: proof of this is the fact that the cuff of the shirt, which flowed on 14060, on the 114060 sometimes it gets entangled.
Which Rolex Submariner is right for me?
If you want a watch closer to the original styles of Rolex Submariner, with a smoother fit, which snags less in the cuffs of shirts and attracts less attention from the beholder, then the Rolex Submariner 14060 is a model for you. Its charm already almost vintage makes it really suitable for any occasion.
Il Rolex Submariner 114060 instead, a more massive timepiece appears, clearly oriented towards sportsmanship. It lends itself perhaps less to formal occasions, but it is certainly able to attract attention and not go unnoticed. If your preference goes to a more eye-catching watch, perhaps also to be worn over the sleeve, the Rolex Submariner 114060 is closer to your tastes.
