Five questions to ... Gamba Orologi

The Chronosect column "Five questions to ..." is back, with which we at Chronosect take care of putting the world of Italian jewelery and watchmaking in touch with customers. Today we interview Fabio Gamba, owner of Gamba Orologi in Bergamo.

Who are you and how long have you been in the business of watches?

My name is Fabio Gamba and I manage my shop, Gamba Orologi, here Bergamo, since 2006, that is for the past fifteen years. However, my relationship with the world of watches is more dating back: in fact I started as small collector e enthusiast of watches, in the nineties. Gradually the passion has increased in quality and availability, until it leads to a job.

Are the customers tourist or local?

Tourists who buy watches here in Bergamo are few: it is not a particularly touristic city, as Milan, Rome or Venice can be. My clientele is mainly local enthusiasts, who then, through word of mouth and personal knowledge, also bring me clients from outside the region. It is important in our work to maintain close personal relationships with customers, based on fmutual trust. I think it's a way of working that pays off.
My clientele is thoughtful, they make thoughtful purchases based on the quality of the watch they buy. They are not impulsive buyers but conscious enthusiasts: ho Than we lucky enough to work with people who know how to appreciate the beauty of the object-clock and its true value.

What kind of watches do you prefer to deal with?

As everyone knows, the most popular watches are the Contemporary sporty Rolexes, which however are not my specialty. I prefer to focus on vintage, either Rolex is patek, for years Fifty ai Ninety. Both Environment is sports. I aim at collecting that goes beyond the contemporary. For me the vintage It is synonymous with plexi glass, although I often treat i five digits di Rolex. Fortunately, my clients don't come to ask me only for fashion watches, but they know how to appreciate timepieces whose value is preserved over time.

How are sales in this period? Other dealers have reported in this column that they have seen the under six thousand euro range suffer and sports Rolexes become stronger, seen as a store of value. Confirm this trend?

2020 saw a watch market in contrast to the rest of the economy. The demand for luxury watches has never waned, despite the restrictions being a brake on the possibility of going to the store in person, the online watch market has therefore established itself, which has received an important boost thanks to the activity of sites such chronosect. As I see it, the selectivity of chronosect, is only allows professionals to sell watches, helps to overcome the trust gap that is inherent to telematic tools.

What do you like most about your job?

I never forget that the watch, as well as a job, must necessarily be a passion. My ideal sale is certainly not the cold, aseptic sale, in which the customer enters, asks how much a certain model costs, negotiates the price and goes out with the watch. My luck is that I can deal with gods instead passionate customers who love the watch as a vehicle of beauty. Even just the pleasure of talking to a customer, making him aware of the particularities of the watch he is seeing, and this is possible above all with vintage. The greatest satisfaction is giving advice to a customer and seeing that you are listened to.
