New Rolex 2021 models: the previews

Dr. N.

Il 7 April 2021, At the Watches & Wonders fair in Geneva, the launches of new models are expected Rolex. As usual, the Crown House maintains maximum confidentiality on revelations relating to its future models. Many clues point to a new edition of the Rolex Explorer II, reached its fiftieth anniversary this year. But let's see all together Rolex previews for 2021.

Rolex Explorer II Ceramic Bezel

The most "popable" among the new Rolex models is undoubtedly this year's great celebration: the Rolex Explorer II. This model has reached, in the current 2021, half a century of life. A certainly notable achievement for a watch that, upon its presentation in the now distant 1971, was considered a model by specialists. The first Rolex Explorer II, in fact, nicknamed “Arrow” by Italian collectors due to the eye-catching 24-hour hand, it was intended for speleologists. These exploration professionals also spend entire weeks in deep, humid caverns, where natural light and the temperature variation typical of the surface are lacking. Over time, the Rolex Explorer II it has also become a watch appreciated by the general public, being able to carry out a useful task even for those who do not spend long periods without seeing the sun: the 24-hour sphere of Rolex Explorer II it can in fact be used to mark a second time zone.

The renewal of the Rolex Explorer II is made particularly plausible, as well as by the dates, by Rolex's choice to put graphics on its website that explicitly refer to speleological explorations and some stylistic features of the Rolex Explorer II, like the Mercedes spheres and the fixed bezel, framed laterally.

What are the new features we are most likely to find on the new one Rolex Explorer II on April 7, 2021?

  • Lunetta in Cerachrom ceramic. The ceramic bezel was gradually introduced by Rolex su DaytonaSubmarinerGMT Master II. It is the change considered most probable to the Rolex Explorer II current, thanks to its characteristics of robustness and high readability, and is intended, as already happened with the Rolex Daytona, to significantly change the aesthetics of the model, with cascading consequences for the rest of the watch. A black ceramic bezel with white numerals would pair very well with, for example, a white dial;
  • White gold version. A Rolex Explorer II in white gold it seems counterintuitive. Why would a steel sports model need a noble metal version? The answer is simple: Rolex loves to celebrate anniversaries with "ennobled" editions of its models. On the other hand, having the precedents of the Rolex Submariner and Rolex GMT Master II in white gold, a sports model made of precious metal is certainly not unthinkable, especially considering that white gold does not upset the aesthetics of a steel model as pink or yellow gold would;
  • Oysterflex bracelet. This bracelet – yeah, it is not a strap: here we explain why – is usually combined with gold cases of various colors, which is why it is likely that, if Rolex Explorer II with an Oysterflex bracelet it will be, it will be combined with a white gold case;
  • A new movement. It is certainly no secret that, when renewing the aesthetics of a watch, Rolex he also loves to perfect the movement. This is why an update to the mechanics of the Rolex Explorer II: innovations which however are expected to be improvements in details which do not upset the proven mechanical basis of the Rolex Explorer II.

The other Rolex novelties: Milgauss, Air-King and… Cellini?

Rolex is a company that does not like to upset its strong points. The Rolex Submariner, Rolex GMT and Rolex Datejust have been cosmetically almost unchanged for many decades. Not the entire Rolex range, however, is made up of great successes. Some watches from the House of the Crown, although well made, do not, for aesthetic reasons, find favor with the general public, at least not to the extent of the more popular models.

A currently underappreciated Rolex is the Rolex Air King. This model, in the past substantially comparable, from an aesthetic and functional point of view, to theOyster Perpetual without date, has been revolutionized with a dial inspired by the on-board instrumentation of the Bloodhound LSR, a land vehicle equipped with a jet engine. The choice, although innovative, did not make its way into the hearts of enthusiasts. Therefore we could think of a review, perhaps in a conservative way, of the current model of Rolex Air King. Perhaps also introducing a Cerachrom bezel…

Speaking of Cerachrom bezel, another candidate to receive this innovation is undoubtedly the Rolex Milgauss. The antimagnetic home model Rolex – he is not the only one: also the one already mentioned Rolex Air King integrates this protection – it has received considerable appreciation from the public, especially in the version with green glass. A Cerachrom bezel might be just what you need to push it even further Rolex Milgauss which, if it is not among the Best-selling Rolexes, certainly has a considerable circle of admirers and enthusiasts.

A field in which Rolex for decades he has been thinking of returning is that of complications. The latest models equipped with a calendar, except for the eccentric Rolex Sky Dweller, date back to the XNUMXs. The financial resources of Rolex and its technical capabilities, however, suggest that the House of the Crown could decide to annoy more famous brands, proposing a line of complicated watches, whose ideal starting point would be an annual calendar. A Rolex with annual calendar would probably be presented in the chest Cellini, so as to elevate the image of the line Rolex – which never really broke through on the market -. In case of poor public appreciation, the reputation of Rolex's most successful models would not be damaged: after all, in this case, it would be just "another Rolex Cellini"...
