The watches

The Rolex GMT-Master is a watch that is highly regarded by enthusiasts and collectors. Among the most important Rolex sportsmen, he is the most complicated, second only to the Rolex Daytona.

The origins of the Rolex GMT-Master date back to the times when a watch with the complication of the time zone was a useful navigation tool for airline pilots, such as the Pan-Am, which chose the Rolex GMT-Master as the official watch for its pilots. In aviation, in fact, it is essential to know at all times the Greenwich Mean Time, from which the Rolex GMT-Master takes its name. That is why the Rolex GMT-Master may well be called a pilots' watch.

The initial GMT reference 6542, called “Pussy Galore” due to its use by the homonymous bond girl in the James Bond film 007 Goldfinger Mission, born in 1954, was replaced five years later by the Rolex GMT-Master ref. 1675, with official superlative chronometer certification. In 1981, the Rolex GMT-Master ref. 16750 features a movement with quick date display and a water resistance of 10 atmospheres, compared to 5 in the previous versions.

The first Rolex GMT-Master 2 is from 1983. This model introduces a series of fundamental innovations: the movement allows you to adjust the hour sphere independently from that of the 24 hours, with single clicks that allow, together with the rotating bezel, to show clearly three time zones at the same time. Not only that: the plexy glass is replaced by the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The Rolex GMT-Master 2 is gradually offered with bezels in numerous color variations, from red and blue “Pepsi” to red and black “Coke”, passing through the famous blue and black “Batman”. One of the recent innovations of the Rolex GMT-Master 2 is the use of scratch-resistant ceramic bezels.

The Rolex GMT-Master 2 today is a watch in great demand and with a great past behind it. Its ever-rising prices attract many savers eager to make a safe investment, both in used and new.
